Live bait VS. Fake bait ......?

Whenever I ask about good bait i usually recieve a mixter of answers including both live bait like night crawlers and minnows or fake bait. Which one do you think is better and you have had success with ? Also what bait have you had success with catching fish like trout, b etc. P.S. I fish in connecticut
