How do I get my hair to be long and curly?

I'm a guy and I really want long hair. I play guitar in a metal band, so I want to grow my hair like down my back. I'm half black, so when I grow my hair out it's all nappy and it grows up, so I'll look like Gerald from Hey Arnold. I've been straightening it for a while, and it's about shoulder length when straightened. Straightening it is too much of a pain, also I don't really like having perfectly straight hair. So, I have two questions. How do I get my hair to grow really really long, and how do I get it to be curly but not nappy?
