Is it possible to attempt to give a hickey but it's unsatisfying?

My boyfriend really wants me to give him a hickey, and I'm worried I wont do it right. I got really close to giving him one but we got interrupted, and he told me "nice try though." He was nice about it but I want to know if it's possible to try to give a hickey and it doesn't feel good?
